As Rachel’s first and only experience (so far) designing for theater, this production was an integral part of her grad school education. The design approach involved a visual contrast between a modern working class and a true-to-text 1920’s upper class - with some exaggerated/gender-bending twists - to highlight the enduring struggle and socioeconomic status quo that keeps this classic relevant.

the Hairy APe

In a new School of Drama tradition, fourth-year student Rey Zane directs O’Neill’s expressionistic study of class conflict and the search for belonging ‒ themes that still resonate almost 100 years after the play’s premiere. Starting as a leader among the firemen who stoke coal on a trans-Atlantic cruise ship, Robert “Yank” Smith clashes with an upper-class passenger, sending him on a devastating journey that ends with him questioning his very humanity.
